Hmm... maybe you could give me a few tips on how to use that layering? I've been making those pictures too (called Särikahvel here), but I never got the point of how it helps me with the picture/details quality.
This is an HDR image - basically it's three exposures of the same image. One over-exposed, one normally exposed, and one under-exposed image. Then I combine them (Photoshop CS2 has a command under the "Automate..." menu to "Merge images to HDR") which brings out the colors in a surreal way.
Most important, technically speaking, is a tripod and using the same F-stop for each image (to keep the DOF constant). Of course finding a good location with the right weather conditions goes without saying...
It's about 20 minutes from my house (New Jersey). I always keep a lookout for places like this whenever I drive anywhere and usually visit them eventually. I have quite a few images from dilapidated locations, so if you enjoy this, then stay tuned
